Martian Vistas

While working on handling the first soil sample at Rocknest, Curiosity took this Mastcam 100 panorama of the 'High Thermal Inertia' unit near Glenelg.

A Mastcam 100 mosaic looking a Glenelg. The three rock types that meet at this site are the foreground, the bedrock left/middle distance and the more distant terrain.

On sol 19 Curiosity took her first large panorama with the zoomed mastcam camera. The images were returned from Mars uncompressed which is a problem for us amateur image processors as the jpg compression used when posting these to the raw image site corrupts the raw Bayer pattern. I have used a variety of techniques to try at rectify this, however there are still many artefacts and a greenish cast to sections of the image caused by this.

On sol 13 Curiosity took a few more images to add the peak of Mt Sharp/ Aeolis Mons into the initial panorama from Bradbury Landing. Here is my attempt to add these images and to extend the sky to make the composition a bit better.

The first 360 degree colour panorama from Curiosity is nearly complete. There are just two frames missing and my panorama stitcher freaked out a bit and left a horizontal line in the foreground, I'll fix this and add some final touches when the final two images are available (and maybe the top of Mt Sharp/Aeolis Mons will be imaged too!)

On sol 3 Curiosity tested out her wide angle mastcam camera by taking a 360 degree colour mosaic of the surroundings. Not all the images from this are avaiable yet so there are gaps which I will fill in when possible. This was primarily a test that I could work with mastcam images.

On sol 3 Curiosity took a spectacular colour mosaic using the Mastcam 34 colour camera. However this is made up of 130 tiny thumbnail images as the full resolution ones have not been sent from Mars yet. This means that the greyscale navcam panorama is of much higher resolution. HereI have tried to combine the two, using the colour information from Mastcam to colour the greyscale navcam images. It is difficult reproject these so they overlay accurately and I have't been entirely successful, however I think it gives a great impression of what is to come.
